Freelance and book writing are avenues many people are exploring these days. Going the self-publishing route is more popular than ever. I’m not one of the people who thumbs my nose at someone who suddenly decides they want to write a book because everybody else is doing it or who discourages others from freelancing because it’s harder than they probably thought. However, there are traits that are must-haves if you want to be successful as a writer.

You Meet Deadlines

Deadlines don’t stop with work or school responsibilities. Sometimes it’s renewing your insurance or paying your bills on time. Some of us are conscientious and good with meetings our deadlines. Others forget them or blow them off until the last minute — sometimes it’s too late. You won’t be successful as a writer, especially freelance, if you can’t make deadlines. If an assignment is due at a certain date and time, that’s it. Essentially, second chances don’t happen and deadlines are not extended. If you want to succeed as a writer, you have to meet deadlines, including the ones you set for yourself. If you want to write a book in a year, if you don’t meet your self-imposed deadlines, your book will never be finished.

You’re self-motivated.
