the first time i heard a symphony

i was ten

shuttled to the coliseum

an enrichment opportunity

for public school children

beforehand the teacher had scolded us

well our parents

well our mothers

for not sending us to school in our finest

i didn’t know what to expect

in fact

i didn’t expect anything at all

but the music

the music

was enthralling

enchanting

rapturous

it took me to another place

had i been in sync with my feelings

or understood them at all

i would have cried

maybe wept

not only for the beauty

but for the fact that I

was incapable

of recreating such a “thing”

i couldn’t carry a tune

nor play any instrument

i couldn’t dance

elegantly
