Beyoncé & Keri Hilson: The Importance of Female Empowerment
My thoughts on the resurfacing of the Keri Hilson/Beyoncé beef… Off the cuff, this was almost 20, yes 20, years ago and Keri needs to start telling folks to kiss her a-s-s.
But I don’t want to make this a celebrity article, so I’ll take it another route.
I’ll start off by saying, no matter what a celebrity presents to us, we don’t know these people. We just don’t. So, this article isn’t necessarily about these two women. But rather, what they presented to us in song/image/persona.
I won’t say there are two types of women. There are way more than two types of women. But for this article, I will focus on two. There are women who hate other women and are competitive for absolutely no reason. Then there are women who love, support, and uplift other women. I also say that to explain the longevity of Beyoncé and her impact on Black female culture.
Unfortunately for Keri, she was marketed as a woman who hates (on) other women. She said as much herself when she explained why she made her entrance into the game taking shots at singers Beyoncé and Ciara on The Breakfast Club.
Keri said the lyrics in question were not her words. Her career was threatened by producer, Polow da Don, if she didn’t record the song. Next, it was “leaked.”
