Black Americans Can Only Be Happy With America If We Accept Second-Class Citizenship
Let’s look at some different scenarios…
Don’t get me wrong — Black joy is everywhere — and it’s not always an act of resistance and defiance. Let me clarify. It’s an act of resistance because we’re not supposed to thrive and survive in this country — but it’s not an anomaly. Let me explain further. I get tired, sick and tired, of people acting like those of us who speak out against racism are miserable because of it. That’s not the case. Civil rights leaders, and what are now called activists, have full and happy lives — despite constantly fighting against a racist system.
The thing is that those of us who fight racism will never be happy, or satisfied, with America, or our place in it, until there is equality.
Speaking for myself — I don’t love America. What is there to love? I’m not happy with America. Furthermore, I will call out racism and injustice any chance I get. As a Black woman, I don’t have the luxury of being happy and satisfied with this country.
Black people who don’t feel this way — and who are happy with America — fall into 5 main categories…
