Derek Chauvin Is The Epitome Of White Privilege.

Tuesday, May 25, was the one-year anniversary of the murder of George Floyd by ex-police officer Derek Chauvin. Throughout the week, mourners have held 9 minutes and 29 seconds of silence — for the length of time Chauvin knelt on the neck of George Floyd. Floyd was unresponsive for 3 minutes and 51 seconds of that time.

George Floyd was a 46-year-old Black man who was murdered outside of a Cup Foods store after paying for cigarettes with an alleged counterfeit twenty-dollar bill. His death triggered protests around the world and calls for the end of police brutality against African Americans.

I remember when the Derek Chauvin verdict was handed down. I found out from a tweet that flashed across my screen. Derek Chauvin had been found guilty of three counts of murder: second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter. The murder of George Floyd had been captured by cell phone video allowing the world to witness the horrific murder. Derek Chauvin had cruelly looked into the camera as onlookers watched in terror, and yelled at him that he was killing Floyd.

Under normal circumstances, the maximum amount of time Derek Chauvin would spend in jail is fifteen years. That’s it. That’s because Missouri’s sentences run consecutively, and Derek Chauvin has no priors. It’s not enough…
