Gap And Levi’s Show American Eagle How To Do A Denim Commercial
Let’s be for real. Everything about the American Eagle “eugenics commercial” was mediocre. It was lazy and basic just like racism and white supremacy. It rested on a voiceover, controversy, white supremacy, and Sydney Sweeney playing up on her image as a sex symbol albeit one with messy hair, wrinkled denim, and a minimally made up face.
Not only was the American Eagle ad decoded as racist by a plethora of viewers, it was not a captivating ad — besides to the male gaze — who largely are not going to walk into an American Eagle store, or shop online, to purchase a pair of the jeans Sweeney was advertising. Maybe that’s why it’s reported foot traffic was down in American Eagle stores the two weeks after the advertisement launched. As reported by Fortune —
Foot traffic fell 9% year over year at American Eagle stores for the week that began August 3, marking the second week of traffic declines since the retailer launched its controversial campaign featuring actor Sydney Sweeney, according to data from Pass_by provided exclusively to Retail Brew.
