I do not think animals belong indoors, and people have become much too obsessed with them. Calling one your "child" shows that there might be many people using them to fill some sort of void. But I do think it's better than using another human as your "emotional support animal." But, if I ever get a pet, I do not want anyone referring to an animal as my child!!!
