I Once Pleaded With Someone Not To Get An Abortion…

Years ago, a friend of mine, a single mother in her twenties with one child already — a toddler — became pregnant for the second time.

She was scared, devastated, teary-eyed, and uncertain. She could barely afford the child she had! What was she going to do with a second one — so soon?! She was already in a rocky relationship with her partner — the father of her child. Also, she’d disappointed her family when she became pregnant with her first child while unmarried — and yet to receive her college degree.

We were coworkers — fast friends — spending a lot of time together, for a brief period in our lives, like young people tend to do. Sometimes we would ride to work together. We occasionally hung out on the weekends and some evenings. Sometimes she brought her firstborn.

I was a few years younger than her, but she came to me for advice that day.

She’d just found out she was pregnant — and there was no way she was going to keep the baby. The father didn’t know. No one else did. I was the only person she’d told so far.

Like I said, we were fast friends, and hung out a lot — but we were not best friends. I’m not sure if I would even consider her a friend these days. As I’d known her for less than a year. But — at the time — I definitely considered her a good…
