I Think It’s Time For Medium To Require Government Names For Its Writers. Here’s Why.

First of all, you provide your government name to Medium as a member of the Partner Program. That’s how you get paid. Without giving Medium your personal information, you can’t receive compensation for your work.

However, I think it’s time for Medium to require writers to attach their government names to their articles.

Why, you may ask????

Well, I’ve read some pretty inflammatory articles here lately. I feel that online, and on social media, people feel emboldened to say things they wouldn’t with their government name and/or image attached.

Some of the articles I’m reading are attacking and demeaning Black women, Black men, or Black people as a whole, and sometimes they’re purportedly written by Black people. Why is this allowed? An article that says all Black men are problematic, and basically worthless, or that all Black women are problematic, and essentially stupid, shouldn’t be allowed to be published anyway. It’s hateful. What does it accomplish?

Medium has guidelines, but they’re applicable to what is distributed, not what is published. Here is a guideline that this article violates:

  • Stories that promote intolerance or prejudice against individuals or groups
