It Was Deion Sanders Who Created The “Savior” Narrative He’s Being Criticized For Abandoning
If you’re a sports fan, particularly a football fan, particularly a college football fan — then you know Deion Sanders is a hot topic of discussion.
The former NFL player left his position as head coach at Jackson State University, an HBCU (Historically Black College and University) to be the head football coach at Colorado University, a PWI (Predominately White Institution) and Power 5 school.
He announced his departure and left on a plane for Colorado in one day. This one day happened to be the day of the SWAC (Southwestern Athletic Conference) championship where Jackson State defeated Southern University — as the cloud of “Coach Prime’s” departure hung over the Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium in downtown Jackson, MS.
Instead of the day being about the players and their victory — their second SWAC championship in as many years — it became about Deion Sanders.
The question on everyone’s tongue was whether Sanders was a sellout or not for leaving the underfunded historically Black college’s football program for “cleaner air” up in Colorado and top notch facilities.
The move came with an astronomical pay raise for Sanders — an increase in salary from $300,000 annually to 5.5 million…
