Let’s Be Clear. The Overturning of Roe v. Wade is About White Women and Babies.
Black and Brown women are catching strays.
On Friday, June 24, after a leaked press release a month earlier, the Supreme Court of the United States of America officially announced that Roe v. Wade has been overturned…based on the laws of each state (for now). Right now, abortion will be illegal in almost half of the states, including the state I live in.
I am deeply unsettled.
Let’s be clear about one thing. This decision was about white women and white babies. White supremacists fear that white women aren’t having enough white babies. The American birth rate has been declining for over a decade. The birth rate has fallen 20% since 2007. When you look at birth statistics, white women have fewer babies than any other racial group in America — only Asian American women have slightly less. They’re also afraid that white people are being replaced, and are soon to be outnumbered, by other racial groups in America. This is called the browning of America.
