Statue of a Black woman in Times Square by sculptor, Thomas J Price

There’s a 12-foot bronze statue of a young Black woman in Times Square. She’s called “Grounded in the Stars” and she was sculpted by Black British sculptor, Thomas J Price. The statue was unveiled on April 29. The young Black woman is wearing a casual short sleeved t-shirt with matching casual pants. She has no adornments like earrings, bracelets, or a head scarf. Her boxed braids are cut short, and she’s standing with her hands on her hips. She’s also the size of the average American woman. Yes, the average size of the American woman is a size 16. I know, I know, much has been made about the statue being overweight and obese, and people are making her out to be a dreaded BIG, BLACK woman, but she’s not morbidly obese.

In the words of comedian Katt Williams, “you can be fat…you can be Black…but you can’t be no fat, Black BITCH.” He said this in response to the negative commentary surrounding singer Lizzo.

Here’s Lizzo, dressed the same way with the same hairstyle, visiting the statue. She has Katt Williams’ words playing in the background.
