Yesterday, Drew Barrymore aired an episode of her eponymous daytime talk show where Vice President, Kamala Harris, stopped by for a chat.

Why did the first woman and person of color to serve as Vice President of America visit a daytime talk show? Probably because the presidential election is seven months away and she wanted to interact with the daytime talk show audience as a means to secure votes. Naturally, as these viewers are primarily SAHM (stay-at-home-moms) or older, retired women, Harris spoke about being a stepmother and how she effectively operates in that role. She also talked about being the first woman elected vice president and the challenges she faces. This was no Katie Britt State of the Union response, where VP Harris aimed to downplay the power of her position, or her power as a woman, to appeal to Stepford Wives. This was Harris being who she’s always been — a woman in power who understands she doesn’t have to mimic a man. Remember how Hillary Clinton was mocked for her pantsuits, and called a closeted lesbian, but crying on the campaign trail in 2008 finally won some people over? But some people thought she was faking, because the truth was, she couldn’t win. Harris, on the other hand, has been mocked for being attractive and dating while she was single.
