Precious was…disturbing. I just couldn’t. I sat in the movie theater and pretty much zoned out. I also honestly just felt it was a bad movie.
It wasn’t necessarily the subject matter. The Color Purple addressed the same subject matter. But Mo’Nique really did act like an animal in Precious.
I know Mo said people were put off by them being “big and Black,” but it wasn’t that at all. It was just so dark and…strange. It was a strange movie.
I think Doubt was a better movie. Given the racial and economic/status component combined with homophobia and ignorance on Viola Davis part, that was common and almost expected during that time from a Black woman of her “status,” it was more “realistic” than Precious. No matter how you felt, you could understand why she wouldn’t want to “ruffle feathers.” That’s part of the brilliance of the movie and also what Meryl Streep understood and made her so adamant in confronting the priest.
I hated Viola Davis in Antoine Fisher. I was actually shocked watching her in later roles cause I kinda really did identify her as that character. But that’s why she’s such a brilliant actress. But I also understood her character in the movie. She was clearly mentally ill and affected by drug use, and they rolled up unexpectedly, and she simply couldn’t cope.
