Donald Trump, after stacking the Supreme Court with far-right judges, and being pivotal in the overturning of Roe v. Wade, is now trying to distance himself from the anti-abortion movement.

This should not be shocking. Trump doesn’t have “beliefs,” especially those of the “moral” kind. He does whatever he can to get what he wants. He uses conservative evangelical Christians, and poor, and rich, white people who feel ignored and left behind, for votes. He uses them to storm the Capitol when he’s not reelected. He uses them to stay out of jail.

Over the last two weeks, Donald Trump has publicly backed away from multiple anti-abortion positions — a move that Democrats see as hypocritical and that, anti-abortion activists warn, risks alienating voters who have long stood by him.

On Thursday, Trump said that, if elected, he would make the government or insurance companies cover in vitro fertilization — a type of fertility assistance that some in the anti-abortion movement want to see curtailed.
