Which Parent is Responsible for an Unwanted Child?
In a country where reproductive freedom has been stripped away from millions of women, what happens when a woman is forced to birth a child she does not want? Does she give the child up for adoption? As it stands, women can not be forced to raise children they do not want, despite the government’s attempts to “force” women into motherhood by limiting, or eradicating, reproductive freedom. They certainly can’t be forced to love them. Currently, 12 states have abortion bans.
What happens when a man doesn’t want anything to do with the child he’s sired? He, too, can’t be forced to raise, or love, them.
Recently, it was rumored that a young NBA player payed 18 years of child support upfront to his child’s mother, an older woman, in order to not ever have anything to do with her or the child in this lifetime. The rumor also claimed that he terminated his parental rights. Both parties deny these rumors, and also, I do not want this to be a celebrity article.
Many men, at least online, claimed the man was not wrong because the woman in question was only trying to secure child support AKA a “million dollar baby.” Many men and women felt that she’d taken advantage of the player’s naiveté.
