Who Do I Write For?
Sorry, but I don’t have a straightforward answer for that question…
When you write, you are always told to know your audience, and if you don’t, to find them. Also, it’s imperative that you don’t switch it up, or lose them, by trying to appeal to everyone.
I do write with an audience in mind, but I also have so many interests! I will also admit — every article I write isn’t with the same audience in mind. First of all, I write fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. I write literary fiction, sci-fi, and chick lit. Once I applied for a writing fellowship, and one response was that it didn’t seem like the same person wrote all the excerpts. LOL! With my essays — I have so much that I like to talk about — race and racism, psychology, social justice, self-help, personal growth, relationships, women’s rights, romance, love, pop culture, dismantling white supremacy, and the list goes on and on.
I don’t worry about alienating readers if they stumble upon something different from what they first read when introduced to me (like an article about race when they first read a self-help article from me), because I will always be true to myself.
Here are two articles I wrote with different audiences in mind. One is literally for everyone, and the other is specifically for Black readers.
