Why didn’t you eat before you came? Or cook at home? Growing up we visited different houses sometimes but we always had food at home. We would eat something to be polite. But we never went anywhere starving. Also it would have been polite for you to bring wine or a dish(es). Two rules. Never go anywhere without money. Never go anywhere hungry. That way you wouldn’t have had to eat there and you could have said you didn’t feel well.
